Money Tips for Kids

Room 5 had a lot of fun learning how to be Moneywise with Tom and Abs, accountants from Price Waterhouse.

They also then did an hour with the ASB people about Financial Literacy.

Room 5 learned so much about how to be smart with their money that they thought it would be a good idea to make a movie and share their ideas with other kids and

VOILA!

Room 5's movie was made called Money Tips for Kids!

We hope you find a tip you can use to become more money wise!

He shared his childhood stories with us and also how much he reads to his family. We all posed for a picture at the end proudly holding up some of the Duffy Books we have received.

A special visitor

Silia had a very special Mother's day Mass at her church when someone unexpected popped in to worship with them.

Read her recount below. What an amazing opportunity!

A Mother’s Day surprise visitor
On Mother’s day it was a very special day for me. Do you want to know why…??? My dad and my uncles didn’t go to church because they stayed at home and made food for my aunties, mum and grandma. So they missed out on meeting someone special.

When we got to church there were two police cars. I didn’t know what other people were thinking but I thought there was a criminal in the church. We went into the church and there was a big space in the front. I could hear people whispering “what is that space for?” because there were no other seats in the church but the three seats. Then a lady came and welcomed us and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Bill English. WOW!!!! isn't it amazing.

Our Sunday school did an action song for all the mother’s and I came straight to my mum. She was sitting in the same row as Bill English. After mass everyone hurried out to meet him. My mother didn’t want to meet him but my brother did. He went and asked him questions like “why did you come to our church?” He also managed to get us a personal picture with him.

It was a day that I will never forget. I wish I could be successful just like him one day.

Parents New to Netbook Evening

A warm welcome and thank you to the wonderful, supportive parents of Room 5. As Room 5's teacher, I was blessed by such a massive turnout to this evening. It was inspiring to see students working alongside their parents showing how they use their netbooks to LEARN, CREATE AND SHARE!

A special thank you to Yayleen from Manaiakalani Netbook training for joining us and to Ana Tui for letting us use her classroom and being a camera person from time to time. Thank you also to Debbie Williams for attending and supporting the evening.

Once again, thank you to Room 5's parents for their great show of support. It was a special night!

River Talks at Omaru Creek Point England Reserve

River Talks - a Recount by Silia Pulotu

After school we went to the Riverside talk. This was on the other side of G.I. It was me, my Mum, Sia and Mrs.Middleton. I had a ride in my teacher’s car. When we got there we were just standing on the footpath because we didn’t know if it was the right place. We walked up and went to see if that was the river talk when the lady came she asked us if we are joining  the river talk and we said yes so we went and stood by the tree.

There was a Maori man who did a Maori talk about the river. I wanted to know but I couldn’t understand. I was at the very front with Sia and Aaliyah. There was a man in the dirty river. He showed us how dirty it is. It looks like a muddy puddle and it is muddy. We went from there to two Tongans who came from Tonga. They did a poem and it was very sad because the girl cried saying the poem. There were Cook Islands who did a drum thing. I liked it because I danced. We went to the last lady and she sang songs. I will try and help to save my environment.

Netbooks are here!!

After a long and patient (not really) 2 week wait, all our netbooks are here and we are very excited. Thank you to our wonderful parents and Anita at Manaiakalani for helping us get them. We can't wait to share our Learning through our digital learning objects that we will create to show our understanding of what we are learning.

Getting to know each other

Our classroom has 6 groups of desks because we are 30 students and this is the best way we could sit and still have space to move around.

In the first 2 days we could choose where to sit but that didn't work because we sat next to our friends and talked a lot.

In week 2 we were moved around until we found a combination that helped the Year 4's and 5's by having a Year 6 in each group.

We spent some time talking to each other and finding our what we had in common by asking questions like "What is your favourite colour?".

This is a short video showing the desks and each group asking questions.
